| Our
most recent works include the demolition and rehabilitation of a
1600 pupil school within a densely populated area of Glasgow. Prior to
demolition each classroom was assessed and checked for asbestos ceiling and
floor tiles. It was confirmed they had an asbestos content and Nicholson
appointed an Approved Asbestos Contractor from their database. Once air tests
were completed, Nicholson carried out an extensive soft-strip prior to machine
demolition. 75% of the materials stripped out of the school were recycled with
the balance going to Land Fill. Demolition was carried out by a Leibherr 962
fitted with a demolition pole and two smaller 942 Leibherrs. Once the building
was on ground level, all steel beams and reinforcing bars were removed and
brick and concrete were put through our Mobile Crushing Plant. The 75 mm
crushed concrete was used on site to re-contour and fill in basements and
ducts. The Local Authority is currently redeveloping the area for housing.

| Sewage
Treatment Works: This involved
the demolition and rehabilitation of a 40 acre Sewage Treatment Works in
Airdrie. Initial work involved the draining, cleaning and disinfecting of many
tanks within the plant. An excavation and removal process was undertaken to
clear the site of any contaminated material before demolition and in-fill
commenced. All contaminated materials were taken to Patersons' Landfill site.
Excavation of the tanks then began by exposing them to four of Nicholsons'
360º Excavators equipped with concrete pulverisers, hydraulic breakers and
grapples. The tank walls were demolished to 1.8 metres below ground level
whilst each tank base was punctured to allow for drainage. A large area was
cleared and Nicholsons' Mobile Crushing Plant was positioned to crush brick and
concrete arisings from the site, providing a supply of granular material for
in-filling and temporary roads. A total of 53000 cu.metres of natural
fill-material, (sub-soil, sands etc.) was imported to the site and utilised as
infill and to grade the complete area to the satisfaction of West of Scotland
Water. The contract period for all of the above works was 16 weeks, however
Nicholson completed the works 4 weeks early allowing the Client to carry out
New Developments. |
